One of the most popular renewable energy sources nowadays is solar power. Solar photovoltaic power, like wind power, is a driving force in the current energy transition. While its role was considered marginal only a few years ago, it is now experiencing rapid growth: global photovoltaic capacity increased from 40 GW in 2010 to 580 GW in 2019. Above all, credit must be given to advances in technological innovation, particularly in the field of materials science, which have enabled photovoltaic plants to compete economically with fossil fuels. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports that the cost of producing electricity from photovoltaics has dropped by 82% in the last decade.
And the future looks even brighter: with next-generation technology, it will be possible to increase solar panel efficiency by 30% and productivity by more than 20% over current levels.
